Mermaid Lagoon is a location on the mystical island of Never Land featured in the Disney Junior animated series, Jake and the Never Land Pirates. It is the favorite resting place of the legendary mermaids who live within the depths of the sea surrounding the island.

Background[]

History[]

Mermaid Lagoon is surrounded on three sides by cliffs with many ferns and plants on them, but one side goes out onto the sea. On this side, there is also a stone archway, on the other side of which faced by the open sea and "out" of the lagoon. There is a gathering of rocks in the middle of Mermaid Lagoon, where the mermaids inhabiting the lagoon like to sunbathe and spend their time out of the water. Though mermaids are the only known beings living in Mermaid Lagoon, other than fish and other sea-creatures, others do occasionally visit the lagoon - a frequent visitor is Peter Pan, who seems to enjoy the mermaid's attention and tells them stories of his heroic battles with Captain Hook.

Role in the series[]

Mermaid Lagoon first appeared in the episode "Surfin' Turf". Jake, Izzy, Cubby and Skully were getting surf lessons from their mermaid friend, Marina. After Izzy's lesson, the surfboard is stolen by Captain Hook and Mr. Smee. Jake and his crew, accompanied by Marina, set off to take back their treasure.

Mermaid Lagoon reappeared in the episode "Jake's Starfish Search", where Marina introduces Jake, Izzy and Cubby to her pet starfish, Sandy, who sings a song for the young pirates. Marina then asks her pirate friends to watch Sandy while she goes to her undersea ballet class. Not long after Marina departs to her class, Captain Hook swipes Sandy away from the sea pups, claiming the starfish's song could heal his injuries.

Mermaid Lagoon reappears in the episode "Captain Hook's Parrot". Captain Hook and his crew made their way pass Mermaid Lagoon with a captured Skully on their way back to the Jolly Roger. Once at the lagoon, Hook believed he and his crew finally gave the sea pups the slip. Skully quickly points out that Hook left a trail in the sand, allowing Jake and his mateys to find them. Hook quickly orders Sharky and Bones to sweep up footprints in the sand, preventing Jake and his crew from following. Sharky and Bones did as Hook commanded as they sing about Hook's clever plan. Skully dances to the song, much to the confusion of Hook, unaware as Skully dances, he leaves a trail of feathers behind, allowing Jake and friends pursuit after Hook.

In "Bucky's Anchor Aweigh!", Marina and the pirates get together at Mermaid Lagoon to present a gift to Bucky, a golden anchor. However, Hook and his crew steal the anchor, having Bucky chasing after them. Even though Bucky left, he left the crew behind. Marina suggests the pirates use an old washed up dingy that fortunately still floats. With the help of their octopus friend, they manage to reunite with Bucky and retrieve the anchor.

Mermaid Lagoon is visited again in the episode "The Mermaid's Song", where Jake and his crew help Marina and her sister Stormy prepare for the Treasure of the Tides ceremony, but Stormy would rather be surfing, until she comes up with the idea to use the power of the mermaid's song to hypnotize Captain Hook, Mr. Smee, and Cubby to do all the work for her. Snappy the Hermit Crab would later rush off to warn Marina about her sister abusing the power of the mermaid's song.

Mermaid Lagoon appears again in the episode "Treasure of the Tides", where Izzy, Marina, Stormy, the mermaids and Lucille the Seal can be seen before setting off to find the "Treasure of the Tides". Hook orders Sharky and Bones to block the lagoon using the Jolly Roger, but the two pirates were no match for the slippery seal, who was able to slip past them and recruit the help of two blue whales to force the Jolly Roger out of the way, so Izzy and the mermaids could catch up to Hook and Mr. Smee.

Mermaid Lagoon reappears in the Halloween episode "Tricks, Treats and Treasure!", as Jake and his crew first stop during there trick-or-treating. The pirate team was greeted by their mermaid friend Stormy, who plans to give her friends a helping of "coconut corn", but Captain Hook and Mr. Smee try to swipe the bowl from her, causing the bowl to fall into the lagoon. Fortunately, Jake uses his quick wit to make a lasso out of seaweed to rescue the bowl and return it to Stormy, before continuing with trick-or-treating on Never Land with his crew mates.

Mermaid Lagoon makes an appearance in the episode special "Jake Saves Bucky", it was the first stop in the race between Jake and his crew and Captain Hook. While searching the lagoon for clues to the riddle Cubby finds Sandy the Starfish. Jake and his crew put two and two together and realize that Sandy is the answer to the first riddle (a "fish that's not a fish"). Once they've solved the riddle, they are informed to go to Skull Rock for the next clue.Captain Hook and Mr. finally reach Mermaid Lagoon to solve the riddle and ultimately fail. After throwing a fit, Captain Hook bumps into Sandy, and figures out the clue (though Smee initially figured it out, Hook scoffed at this before realizing for himself). Hook and Smee are then informed to go to Skull Rock.

Mermaid Lagoon reappears in the episode "Seahorse Saddle-Up!" as the starting line and finish line in the seahorse Never Sea race.

Marina and Stormy offer the amnesia-stricken Captain Hook a large clam with a huge pearl inside in hopes of helping Jake and his crew restore Captain Hook's memory for Mr. Smee and the rest of Hook's crew, but this fails.

Mermaid Lagoon reappears in the episode "Trading Treasures", where Queen Coralie plans on hosting her Fin and Frolic dance party at the Mermaid Lagoon. However, while preparing for the party, she notices her Golden Glam-Shell is missing, and goes to Jake and his crew for assistance in finding her shell. Skully recalls seeing the Golden Glam-Shell in the grasp of the Octopus while he was flying back to Pirate Island. Jake and his crew offer to retrieve the shell from the octopus while Queen Coralie finishes her preparations for her Fin and Frolic dance party back at Mermaid Lagoon. Mermaid Lagoon reappears at the end of the episode after Jake and his crew recover the Glam-Shell and return it to Queen Coralie. She uses the shell to light up Mermaid Lagoon for the Fin and Frolic dance party.
